Overview
This article covers two related issues for Sage | Sage espresso machines. Follow the branch that matches your symptom(s).
- (A) Unable to descale (no flow)
- (B) Can't enter Descale Mode or activate Descale Cycle
- (C) Can't complete Descale Cycle / Descale indicator stays ON
Symptom(s)
- Attempting to descale but no water/solution comes through the outlets
- Descale light will not turn off after attempting to descale
- Cannot seem to enter Descale Mode or machine remains in a different mode (e.g., Brew)
Cause(s)
A. Can't descale (no flow to outlets)
- Lack of maintenance
- Hard water use
- Scale and mineral buildup restricting flow
B. Can’t enter Descale Mode / activate Descale Cycle
- Commonly user error
- incorrect button combination or timing
- missing or incorrect step during Descale Cycle
- Preconditions for Descale Mode not met
- machine still pre-heating
- water tank unattached or empty
- machine is in a different mode (ie. brew, clean)
C. Can't complete Descale Cycle / Descale indicator stays ON
- Missing or incorrect Descale step
Troubleshooting Steps
A. Can’t Descale (solution won’t flow through outlets)
1. Prep the water tank
- Empty, rinse, and refill tank with fresh water mixed with descaling solution per the label ratio
- Ensure the tank is properly secured to the machine
2. Ensure brew head is unobstructed
- Portafilter/filter baskets should be removed from the brew head
- Inspect and clean the brew head and shower screen area
3. Prime the pump (manually purge the machine)
- With the machine idle, run hot water through the hot water outlet and the brew head in short bursts to draw solution into the system.
- Turn the steam dial/knob to encourage flow; stop when steady flow starts.
4. Start the Descale Cycle
- Refer to your product specific instruction manual to perform a Descale Cycle, as steps can be model specific
- Enter the Descale Mode using your model's specific button sequence
- Perform a full Descale Cycle accordingly to your model
5. Rinse thoroughly
- Empty and rinse the tank; refill with fresh water
- Run the full rinse cycle until the system is clear of descale solution
6. If no flow persists:
- Repeat Step 3 with fresh descale solution, then reattempt the Descale Cycle
- No flow persisting despite repeated attempts can indicate heavy scale and mineral buildup within internal components
- Please contact Sage | Sage Customer Support for further assistance; service to the machine may be needed
B. Can’t Enter Descale Mode / Can't Activate Descale Cycle
1. Perform basic prep for descaling
- Machine should be ready and idle (not actively brewing, steaming)
- Water tank is prepped with machine compatible descaling solution per label ratio and securely attached to machine
- Drip tray has been emptied and inserted; portafilter and other attachments have been removed
2. Confirm model specific instructions for activating Descale Cycle
- Refer to your product specific instruction manual for prep instructions (ie. Machine should be ON or OFF)
- Confirm the exact button combination and hold duration to enter Descale Mode
- If nothing happens, reattempt deliberately (hold for full duration; release buttons in order if specified; avoid rapid or accidental presses).
3. If machine still will not go into Descale Mode, or is stuck in a different mode
- Power OFF and unplug the machine for a few minutes
- Plug in the machine, power back ON, and retry the sequence
- If machine is stuck in a different mode, perform a factory reset (see product manual; note saved drinks will be reset)
4. If issue persists:
- Please contact Sage | Sage Customer Support for further assistance.
C. Can't Complete Descale Cycle or Descale Indicator Stays ON
1. Perform basic prep for descaling
- Machine should be ready and idle (not actively brewing, steaming)
- Water tank is prepped with machine compatible descaling solution per label ratio and securely attached to machine
- Drip tray has been emptied and inserted; portafilter and other attachments have been removed
2. Confirm model specific instructions for Descale Cycle
- Refer to your product manual for performing entire Descale Cycle
3. If cycle won't progress:
- Consult product manual to confirm no steps are missed or incorrect
- nsure water tank does not run empty during Descale/Rinse Cycle
4. If Descale Indicator remains ON:
- Once completing Rinse Cycle, power machine OFF. then back ON; check if Descale Indicator remains
- Some models clear indicators after a specific completion step. If light remains after confirmed full descale and rinse, consult product manual for indicator reset behavior.
5. If issue persists:
- Please contact Sage | Sage Customer Support for further assistance.
Outcome & Next Steps
After completing the appropriate branch, the machine should restore normal flow. For models with descale indicators, the light should clear after following model specific steps from the instruction booklet to complete a full Descale Cycle. If the machine continues to have restricted flow, repeated priming of the machine fails, or if the descale indicator still does not clear after a complete Descale and Rinse Cycle, please contact Sage | Sage Customer Support for further assistance. Continued operation with heavy scale and mineral buildup can damage internal components of the machine.
