For the best-quality espresso, you must regularly clean and maintain your machine. In this video, our host demonstrates how to clean the drip tray and storage tray included with your Barista Express™.
You can do this during your regular clean, or when the drip tray floater reads “Empty Me”.

How to clean the drip tray

It is essential to keep your tools clean so nothing interferes with the exquisite taste of your third-wave speciality coffee. We designed the Barista Express™ with this in mind. It has a complete self-monitoring cleansing and descaling cycle built into the machine that will notify you when to perform the next cleaning cycle.

How to perform a cleaning cycle

A clear water backflush is an important part of the daily cleaning and maintenance of your machine. We recommend that you perform a clear water backflush after each brewing session to clean any loose grounds, coffee oils and other residues from the espresso machine.

The water filter included with your machine filters for 90 days or 40L – at which point, you’ll need to replace the water filter. In this video, you will learn how to replace a used filter to ensure your coffee is kept at its best quality.

To ensure your Barista Express™ is always ready to steam your milk, we recommend cleaning and unblocking the steam wand after each use. Follow along with our video as we demonstrate this simple yet essential process.

How to clean and unblock the steam wand

Regular maintenance of your steam wand is crucial to the success of your lattes, cappuccinos, flat whites and coffee art. Unlike some cleaning tasks, which you only need to do occasionally, you should clean your steam wand after every single use. This is to avoid unwanted buildup of milk residue. But don't worry, it's easy and straightforward!

Although some parts of your Barista Express™ only need occasional cleaning, some need to be maintained before or after every use.
The filter basket is one of those items. In this video, our host shows you how to perform a filter basket rinse after each brewing session. Doing this will avoid residual coffee buildup and promote a higher-quality extraction.

While some maintenance is only occasionally necessary, there are some tasks you should do every time you use your machine – and purging your group head is one of them.
In this video, we show you how to purge your group head before use to ensure higher-quality results. The group head purge is vital to maintaining a great-tasting cup of coffee.

Like a barista, you’ll need to properly care for your machine to keep it in tip-top shape – and that means regularly cleaning every part.
In this video, our host explains how to clean the shower screen included with your Barista Express™. This is to avoid a buildup of coffee residue which can have a serious effect on your coffee’s flavour.

Your Barista Express™ is equipped with a water filter to remove minerals from the water, ensuring each cup of coffee you brew tastes great.
But minerals can build up in the heating elements of the espresso maker, so you’ll need to learn how to descale the machine, removing the hard water deposits from the system. See how it's done here!
